Acer Launches New Predator, AIO, Compact Desktops

With the holidays approaching, system builders are making all effort to get your attention. Acer is no exception, unveiling three desktops today, including a extra affordable version of the Aspire Predator gaming rig we reviewed in August. Acer calls its new Predator (AG5900) a "mainstream alternative" to the premium AG7750, but it still offers bounty of performance for gamers and enthusiasts.

The "budget" machine packs an Intel Core i7-870, a 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5850, 8GB of RAM, 1.5TB of storage, a DVD drive, and it has three open 3.5-inch bays with one standard PCI and two PCIe x1 slots. That compares to the AG7750's i7-930, Nvidia GeForce GTX 470 (motherboard supports tri-SLI), 12GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage. Pricing is $1,350 for the former, $2,000 for the latter.

Panasonic ships rugged 3lb, 12.1" Toughbook S9

Panasonic is shipping what it says is Earth's lightest 12.1-inch laptop with a built-in DVD drive. At merely three pounds, the Toughbook S9 is apparently leaner than competing mobile PCs, with specs including a 2.4GHz Core i5-520M vPro CPU, 2GB of RAM (supports as much as 6GB), 320GB of storage, a DVD burner, and up to 11 hours of battery life. It also sports a 1280x800 anti-glare display, a fingerprint reader, HDMI and VGA-out, as well as gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and optional WWAN connectivity.

Nintendo 3DS Japanese launch dates and price revealed

Nintendo has lastly given a launch date and price for its upcoming 3DS handheld. The company’s president, Satoru Iwata, announced during a press occasion in Tokyo that the novel portable gaming console would arrive in Japan next year, on February 26, for 25,000 yen -- around $300. He was fewer specific about a release date in the U.S. and Europe, but did say the machine would be hitting those markets a little bit in March 2011, so you won’t be kept waiting much longer.

Besides giving fans something to mark on their calendars Iwata too showed off some of the 3DS’ new functions, as well as a Virtual Console feature that will allow users to download Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. Tag Mode enables Nintendo 3DS portables to discover nearby handhelds to connect with and exchange data, Mii Studio can automatically make ‘Mii’ customizable avatars based on genuine photos, while players will be able to enjoy several "AR Games" (Augmented Reality) that will come pre-loaded on the system.
